Threads Marketing for Etsy Sellers: The Channel Your Instagram Already Pays For
Threads crossed 500 million monthly users in June 2026, and it runs on the Instagram account you already have: same handle, some of the same followers, no new audience to build from zero. What it wants from you is different, though. Posts here read like someone talking, and a caption you paste over from Instagram lands like an advert in a group chat.

The Instagram caption is the wrong shape
Most shops arrive on Threads by pasting. The Instagram caption goes across, hashtag block and all, and it sits there getting nothing. Threads allows one topic tag per post, so all but one of those tags is ignored outright.
The rest of the mismatch is length and tone. You get 500 characters, and only the first line shows in the feed before it truncates, so an opening that reads “Introducing our new hand-poured soy candle collection” has spent its one chance. What earns a reply is smaller and more specific: the clasp you re-carved three times, the glaze that came out wrong and sold anyway, the question you can't decide on. Threads weights replies heavily in its ranking, so an opening that invites one is worth more than a tidy product description.
Worth being honest about the ceiling here. Meta rebalanced ranking in late 2024 to favour accounts you already follow, which means the unconnected reach that made early Threads feel like a gold rush has narrowed. This is a channel for being recognised by people who half-know you already, not a discovery engine. If you have one hour a week for marketing, spend it on Pinterest.
Threads posts, written for Threads
Postivia drafts the Threads post from the listing you're already promoting, using your shop's own vocabulary and the edits you've made to previous drafts. You get two versions to pick between, both inside the character limit, both editable. Nothing posts without you seeing it first.
Written to the 500-character limit
Every Threads post comes back inside the limit, with the hook in the first line so it survives the feed's truncation.
One topic tag, not twenty hashtags
Threads allows a single tag per post. Postivia writes for that rule instead of pasting an Instagram hashtag block.
Your shop voice, not generic AI copy
Posts are drafted from your listing's own words and the corrections you've made to past drafts, so they read like you at a market stall.
No second writing session
Threads sits in the same weekly content pack as Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Bluesky.

Is Threads worth it for an Etsy shop?
If you already have an Instagram account, yes: Threads reuses that handle and follower graph, so the setup cost is a few minutes and the audience is partly pre-built. It reached 500 million monthly users in June 2026, and the posts that do well there are conversational rather than promotional. Treat it as a place to be recognised, not a source of measurable clicks — Pinterest is still the channel that sends search traffic to a listing.
Do I need an Instagram account to use Threads?
Normally yes. Your Threads handle and display name come from Instagram, and each Threads profile is tied to one Instagram account. Meta has been testing standalone sign-up with just an email or phone number in the EU, UK and Switzerland, so UK sellers may see that option. Outside the test you have to create an Instagram account first, even if you never post there.
How many characters can a Threads post be?
500 characters for the post itself. Since September 2025 you can also attach a longer text block of up to 10,000 characters, which appears as a separate expandable section and doesn't count against the 500. For a shop post, the 500 is the part that matters, and the first line is what shows in the feed before it truncates.
Do hashtags work on Threads?
Threads uses topic tags instead. You add one per post, the # symbol is optional, and a tag can contain spaces and special characters. Only one is allowed, so the Instagram habit of stacking twenty tags at the end of a caption does nothing here except make the post look like an advert.
Can I put a link to my Etsy listing in a Threads post?
You can, and Meta has said links aren't deliberately downranked; Adam Mosseri has also said the algorithm doesn't place much value on them, and Threads later adjusted ranking to weigh URLs more heavily. In practice a link rarely earns the replies that lift a post, so the reliable pattern is to write the post so it stands on its own and keep the shop link in your bio.
How often should a solo seller post on Threads?
Two or three posts a week, written in the same session as your other channels. Threads posts need no polished photography and no video, so the marginal cost once a listing is already written up is minutes rather than an evening.
